Certifiber Tester (OTDR) for Optical Fiber Testing

Fluke Optifiber PRO OTDR SM

Fluke Optifiber PRO OTDR MM SM QUAD

Fiber Optic OTDR OLTS, OptiFiber PRO, CertiFiber PRO

Tier 1 and Tier 2 testing services, including Fiber Core Inspector for Data Center and backbone network applications.

Fluke CertiFiber PRO QUAD OLS

OLTS provides the most accurate insertion loss measurements on links by using a light source on one end and an electrical meter on the other to measure the amount of light coming out at the far end. This is necessary for fiber testing per industry standards, both TIA and ISO. The term “Tier 1” is used to describe testing with OLTS.

Fluke OptiFiber PRO QUAD OTDR

OTDR characterizes the loss of links for each splice and connector by sending light pulses down the fiber and measuring the amount of light reflected back from each pulse. It is recommended for testing fiber per industry standards, essential for emerging short-range single-mode applications, and is invaluable as part of a comprehensive testing strategy. Testing with OTDR and OLTS is referred to as “Tier 2” testing within TIA standards and “extended” testing within ISO standards.
Although measurements from these two tools may seem similar, they play distinct and important roles. This article will explain how these testing devices work, when they should be used, and how they complement each other to ensure optimal performance of optical fiber links and maximize customer satisfaction.

Overview
Contamination of fiber optic connectors is a leading cause of fiber failures. Dirt and contaminants cause insertion loss and reflection that hinder light transmission and damage transceivers. Fiber loss and OTDR testing can address this issue, but in many cases, dirty connections can lead to lengthy and inaccurate fiber tests.

Since contaminants can be an issue before, during, or after fiber optic certification testing, and can transfer from one end of a fiber optic connector to another, both sides of any connection must always be cleaned and inspected. Additionally, contaminated fiber optic connectors can cause permanent damage, as debris is crushed between the ends during physical contact. Even patch cables or pigtails that are factory fresh must be inspected, as protective caps do not keep the ends of fiber optic connectors clean. To avoid this common cause of failure, begin by inspecting the ends of fiber optic connectors and removing any contaminants before inserting them into panels or equipment.

FI-7000 FiberInspector Pro is a fiber optic inspection scope that allows you to inspect and certify the ends of fiber optic connectors within 1 second, enabling you to get the job done right the first time. This fiber optic inspection scope provides automatic PASS/FAIL certification, eliminating guesswork from fiber inspection, so anyone can be a fiber expert.
