A reliable network connection starts with using high-quality LAN cables and proper termination. Professional LAN cable termination not only ensures a stable network connection but also helps prevent data loss and external signal interference. This article will guide you through the steps of professional LAN cable termination, from preparing the tools to testing the cable, ensuring that your network installation delivers maximum performance and long-term reliability.
Prepare the Equipment

- LAN cable (Cat5e, Cat6, or appropriate type)
- RJ45 connectors
- Crimping tool
- Cutter or wire cutter
- Cable stripper or wire peeling tool
- LAN cable tester to check functionality after connection
Cut the Cable to the Desired Length

- Use a cutter to cut the LAN cable to the desired length, considering the distance from the cable end to the connection point.
- Ensure the cut is clean and the length is appropriate—not too long or too short.
Strip the Cable

- Use a cable stripper to strip the outer sheath of the LAN cable, exposing the copper wires inside.
- Be careful not to cut or damage the inner wires while stripping the sheath.
Organize the Wires

- Arrange the wires in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
- TIA-568A standard: White-green, green, white-orange, blue, white-blue, orange, white-brown, brown
- TIA-568B standard: White-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown
- Ensure the wires are all flat and aligned without twists or tangles.
Cut Excess Wire

- After arranging the wires, use a cutter to trim any excess wire, leaving just enough to fit into the RJ45 connector.
Insert the Wires into the RJ45 Connector
- Insert all the wires into the RJ45 connector in the correct order, making sure each wire is pushed all the way into the connector.
- Check that each wire is correctly aligned and seated firmly inside the connector.
Crimp the RJ45 Connector

- Use a crimping tool to press the RJ45 connector tightly, ensuring the metal pins inside the connector pierce into the copper wires.
- Crimp the connector until the wires are secure and can’t be pulled out.
Test the LAN Cable

- Use a cable tester to check if each wire is properly connected, testing the functionality of each pin.
- Make sure there are no incorrect connections (such as crossed wires or wires not making contact).
Clean Up
- If needed, organize the cable neatly or, if necessary, use cable ties to prevent the wires from tangling.
